Knife drawn in fight Saturday

This last Saturday night a fight started outside of a local bar. According to the news, the two men did not know each other and the fight was in regards to how loud a car stereo was being played. I don't know many other specifics, the news did not have much information, but I do know one of the men was stabbed a number of times and went to the hospital and the other was apprehended a while later and taken into custody by the police.

At first I thought about writing a knife defense tip today when I heard this story, but then I thought, what in the world were these guys fighting over? How stupid can you get? One guy in the hospital, lucky to be alive, and the other locked up in jail and facing felony charges. Over a loud car stereo? STUPID!

The problem is that many fights with as severe or worse consequences are over just as stupid incidents. And I have to admit, when I was younger I was involved in a number of these kinds of stupid fights.

Your first and foremost thought regarding personal safety and security is staying alive, and then staying out of the hospital, and then not getting hurt at all, and then not having to deal with the legal system. All of these are realities of fighting.

The best way to avoid all of these negative consequences is to not fight. To be aware and avoid altercations that lead to these undesirable endings. Take a moment and think!

I doubt either of those men thought they would be in the hospital or jail at the end of the night when they went out. Now, over something so stupid, both of their lives have been changed, possibly forever. (felonies stick with you for life, as do some injuries, not to mention death that was narrowly escaped)

I believe in being prepared. I believe in attacking back when all else has failed and it is you or some attacker. But do not be stupid. Do not risk everything over something so small and dumb.

Stay Smart and Safe,

Alain

  • Good point, and thought provoking, too. One thing jumped out at me as a purely hypothetical question: Does avoiding injury come before avoiding legal troubles? Would I choose a broken arm or leg over legal ramifications---even if those legal ramifications end up being just lawyer fees and time?

I don't really know. And hopefully I will continue to not know. But thanks, Alain, these things need to be said and said repeatedly, because obviously some people haven't heard them.
