13 Leadership Principles

John Brock, who teaches leadership classes at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, shared a list of thirteen principles of leadership he adapted from the United States Military Academy with Harvey Mackay:

1. Know yourself and seek self-improvement.
2. Be technically and tactically proficient.
3. Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.
4. Make sound and timely decisions.
5. Set the example.
6. Know your employees and look out for their well-being.
7. Keep your employees well informed.
8. Develop a sense of responsibility in your subordinates.
9. Insure that the task is understood, supervised and accomplished.
10. Train your employees as a team.
11. Employ your team in accordance with its capabilities.
12. Set your priorities.
13. Take the initiative.

Mackay really liked the list and so do I. Incorporating these thirteen principles into you personal and professional life will take you far. If you want to make things happen, you must be a leader. These principles will help you be a leader that inspires followers.

Year to Success

I recently discovered a great book and website. The book is Year To Success by Bo Bennett. The book is full of lessons and exercises that will help you succeed in many areas. If you sign up at the website, you can receive a lesson a day for the entire year. (Free!)

Check it out at:

http://alain.yeartosuccess.com

Remember, just buying the book or signing up for the lessons through e-mail will not help you succeed. You must actually put some effort into the lessons and do them. Like anything, you get out what you put in.

I recommend you take time early in the morning and set it aside to complete the day's success lesson and action items. Start your day out right with a positive message and then keep the momentum going for the rest of the day.

If you just aren't a morning person, take some time at the end of the day to reflect on the day's successes and to do your success lesson before going to bed.

Obviously other times will work too. Just make sure you do them. I find many people get too caught up in the day to take time for important but not urgent items, so the mornings work best.

I hope you enjoy Bo's book and website. Here's to your success!

You MUST educate yourself through reading

I read this in Ron White's newsletter today.

"The average CEO in America reads 4-5 books per month. The average American reads one book per year and 60% of us don't get past the first chapter!"

Ron is a memory and sales training expert and with the above statistics, he tells people, "You MUST educate yourself through reading."

I have written before how important it is to read. I read between 4 and 8 books a month, depending on the month and the size of the books. I agree with Jim Rohn when he says skip a meal, but don't skip your reading.

This can be one of the most important things you do to help you make things happen. READ!
