Goal Setting Quotes

I've always been a firm believer in setting goals. I've presented numerous goal-setting workshops over the years, especially when I was running The Center for Leadership Development at The University of Montana. When you set goals, you then have to have the determination and motivation to see them through. Sometimes a good quote or two helps with that motivation. Here are a few good goal-setting quotes. I hope you enjoy them and that they help you stay motivated to make things happen.

Don't take the casual approach to life. Casualness leads to casualties. - Jim Rohn

A clear vision, backed by definite plans, gives you a tremendous feeling of confidence and personal power. - Brian Tracy

Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan. - Tom Landry

Make every goal clear, specific, measurable, and time bounded. - Brian Tracy

Goal-setting illuminates the road to success just as runway lights illuminate the landing field for an incoming aircraft. - Nido Qubein

A person without a goal is like a ship without a rudder. - Denis Waitley

In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, they had better aim at something high. - Henry David Thoreau

Sly's Top 10 Tips for Life

One of the books I read this last week was Sly Moves by Sylvester Stallone with David Hockman. It was a good quick read with some very practical advice regarding exercise and eating. I've always liked Stallone, and I enjoyed the personal stories he shared in this book. If you like Stallone, or just want some easy to follow exercise and eating advice, check it out.

In the book, Stallone gives Sly's Top 10 Tips for Life. I'll share them here, they are worth paying attention to:

10. Believe it! Truly, it can be done and it will.

9. Every day - every few hours - see your vision materializing.

8. Don't discuss your dreams. Pursue them!

7. If other people can steal your idea, most likely they will.

6. Don't be afraid of embarrassment while pursuing your goal. It's all part of being committed.

5. Being naive in business and in understanding human nature is a recipe for disaster.

4. Study people's success stories hard. Study their failures even harder.

3. Enthusiasm is like a wonderful disease - keep spreading it until everyone's infected.

2. Only choose a goal that - if you had to - you'd gladly pursue for free. In order to achieve success, you've got to follow your passion.

1. Most important: If it's not broken, break it. That's how new discoveries are made. That's why everything that changes life is called a breakthrough.

Toastmasters International

Last night's episodes of American Inventor showed the importance of good presentation skills. The inventors were not just judged on their inventions, but on how they presented their new products.

The passion, energy, and conviction put into the successful presentations helped those inventors get through to the final round which included receiving $50,000 dollars to help develop their invention.

Communicating is such an important skill. One excellent organization to help you develop your communication skills is Toastmasters International. There are chapters all over the United States and many other countries. When you become a member, you will have the opportunities to develop your speaking and leadership skills.

The Toastmasters speaking manuals provide guidance in learning and practicing the different elements of public speaking to take your presentations to a higher level. Table Topics gives the opportunity to learn to quickly form answers and speak off the cuff. This skill is extremely important in so many areas. Contests are a fun way to get out of your comfort zone and speak to different people and network with members from different clubs. The Toastmaster magazine has many useful articles on communication and leadership. These are only a few of the many benefits of being a member.

If you take on leadership roles, you will be given guidance and opportunities to expand your leadership skills and develop attributes that will help you with many other areas of your life.

I cannot recommend this organization enough. Besides all you learn, and the opportunities you have for improving, you will meet many wonderful people who all have the same goal, to better themselves in the areas of communication and leadership. I personally have been a member of several Toastmasters clubs in California and Montana. I am currently a member of the Breakfast Forum club in Missoula, and am a former President of that club, and a former Area Governor for this area. My business partner in one of my companies is a friend I met through Toastmasters. I have gained much from this organization, and I'm sure you can too.

You can find a club near you by visiting www.toastmasters.org

I Am Father Time - I will give to each and every one of you, 24 precious, irreplaceable, golden hours every day of the rest of your life - spend them wisely and cautiously - time is our most priceless gift - each second is a precious and valuable diamond - we don't know how much time we have left.

Take time

Take tiem to keep your health... It is above all gold and treasure.
Take time to love and be loved... It is a God-given privilege.
Take time to save... It is the foundation of your future.
Take time to give... It is too short a day to be selfish.
Take time to be friendly... It is the road to happiness.
Take time to play... It is the secret to perpetual youth.
Take time to pray... It is the greatest power on earth.
Take time to read... It is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to think... It is the foundation of strength.
